RES4MED hosts a high-level Seminar to the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on renewable energy deployment in emerging economies
This morning on 11 May 2018, the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation hosted a high-level seminar organized by RES4MED&Africa on the role of renewable energy in emerging economies.
The workshop is a result of a long-established cooperation between RES4MED&Africa and the Italian Ministry Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, and has been directed to a selected group of Ministry diplomats. The aim was to provide participants with an overview of the increasingly important role that renewable energy sources play in Italian economic diplomacy, from the perspective of some of the most important operators in the sector.
As remarked by the Sustainable Development Goal 7 of the UN Agenda 2030 and by the Strategia Energetica Nazionale Italiana 2017, the topics of energy security and diversification of energy requirements are of national and global interest. In this context, renewable energies play an ever increasingly important role, and are now universally recognized as key enablers to the sustainable development of markets and policies of emerging countries, in particular for the Southern Mediterranean and Sub-Saharan African regions.
“Renewable energies are of central importance to our energy policies and so to Italy’s international action on the bilateral and multilateral level, to support the excellence of our companies. Therefore the Ministry invests a lot in providing our diplomats with updated tools to face the challenges of this continuously evolving sector”, with these words the Min. Plen. Massimo Gaiani opened the conference.
In order to efficiently allow for massive renewable energy deployment, public-private cooperation turned out to be a key element. “A bright future and the achievement of universal access to electricity in Africa goes through the promotion of regional programs supported by international institutions. This is exactly the aim of RES4MED&Africa: a platform that gathers Italian and international members across the value chain and creates opportunities for dialogue to promote public-private partnerships”, affirmed Antonio Cammisecra, CEO of Enel Green Power and President of RES4MED&Africa.
During the event, some of the main Italian players, members of RES4MED&Africa, including Terna, Italgen and Gruppo Maccaferri, brought their direct experience and point of view on topics concerning the main renewable energy technologies in terms of resource potential, costs, new business models and socio-economic impact.
